Using Formulas To Solve Problems

There are five types of problems that can be identified:  Direct Translation – problems in which English is directly translated into an equation by using key terms in the verbal description.  Mixture – problems where two or more quantities are combined in some fashion.  Geometry – problems where the unknown quantities are related through geometric formulas.  Uniform Motion – problems where an object travels at a constant speed.  Work – problems where two or more entities join forces to complete a job.

Cartesian Coordinate System

The Cartesian coordinate system is a graphing system that depends on two coordinates, in order to establish a point on the graph. The two coordinates are known as the x-coordinate and the y-coordinate. On the Cartesian coordinate system, the vertical line represents the y-axis and the horizontal line represents the x-axis. The numbers on the vertical line or y-axis represents different values for the y-coordinate; vice versa for the x-axis. One x-coordinate and one y-coordinate makes one Point, which is written in this format called an ordered pair.

Point Slope Equation Of A Line

The point-slope equation of a line is a formula used to identify a specific linear equation, utilizing a given point and slope. The point-slope equation of a line uses m, x1, and y1 to calculate the linear equation taking the final form y = mx + b; known as the slope-intercept form

Linear Equation In One Variable

A variable is a letter or symbol that represents the various values that a variable could be within mathematical operations. A common variable used in algebra is x and y. Since we are evaluating linear equations, the variable is written with no exponent or root function. The purpose of this linear equations in one variable is to provide knowledge on how to solve and evaluate a linear equation with one variable, that has one solution.
